Description
One particular stress that Crossroads Care can relieve for unpaid carers is anxiety about what would happen to the person they look after in an emergency. For instance, the carer might be taken ill suddenly, have an accident or be called away for work urgently. What would happen then?
Crossroads Care Emergency Respite Service is there to ensure care in the home will be given by highly trained staff, thus giving carers peace of mind. What is more, it is free of charge.
Crossroads Care staff can take over caring duties for up to 48 hours – 72 over a weekend or a bank holiday – until the emergency is over or other care arrangements are in place.
How it works
Crossroads Care will meet the carer and the person they care for at home to talk about what care is given. The carer must be providing regular substantial care for someone who is frail, has an illness, disability, sensory impairment or dementia. This information forms the emergency care plan and is stored in Crossroads Care database so that, should the need arise, a carer support worker can be provided within one hour once Crossroads Care is notified of the emergency.*
What is considered to be an emergency?
A carer may have to suddenly go into hospital or perhaps may have an accident. Maybe a carer’s close relative is taken ill or a carer needs support to attend a funeral of someone close. It could be there is a real risk to the carer’s job on a particular occasion.
The emergency respite service is not intended for day to day respite care, short breaks, non-emergency situations such as social occasions or hobbies or as replacement care when a home care provider has not turned up.
Price
This is a free emergency service. We can provide regular respite service at an hourly charge should that be required.
*It must be noted that a service cannot be guaranteed and it will be necessary to show that the situation really is an emergency. In most cases this should not be in doubt.
