Disability History Month

This annual month-long (14th November to 20th December 2024) event observes the history of the disability rights movement and looks to commemorate and celebrate achievements of disabled and neurodiverse individuals as well as groups and organisations.

In the UK this annual event was first celebrated in 2010 and has continued to be celebrated across the UK ever since.

Disability can include, but is not limited to; physical impairment, mental health, neurodiversity, long term or chronic illness.  Recent statistics estimate that 1 in 5 people are disabled, that equates to 20% of the population.  So being disabled is more common than you may think, although many people may not realise that they fall into the definition of disabled, or may not wish to identify as disabled.  This is often due to the negative stigma that can often be associated to the term disabled.
