Black History Month – Building a new life in Britain - October (LIBR)

KC LIB Local

The postcard above features three women – Cecilia Wade, Elanor Henry and Gene Martin. The main photograph is titled ‘Last Sunday in Montserrat’ and shows Cecilia Wade in 1956. The photograph in the top corner is of Elanor Henry at a friend’s wedding in 1959, and the photograph beneath that features Gene Martin, pictured on Denbigh Road, Westbourne Grove, in 1965. Each of these images tells a story of the life left behind, the life built in the UK and the friends made along the way. - Kensington & Chelsea Local Studies & Archives ©

Exhibition in Civic Centre, Kensington Town Hall - Monday 16 October to Monday 30 October

The Windrush Generation included soldiers, doctors, nurses, teachers, university students, transit workers, artists, politicians, and athletes, who came to London between 1948 and 1970 upon invitation of the British Government to rebuild a nation ravaged by war.

To celebrate Black History Month, last year’s bi-borough exhibition, Windrush Generation: Unsing Heroes, which brought together stories of local residents, will be on public display in the Civic Area in Kensington Town Hall. Please do visit to learn more about the lived experiences of the borough's local residents.
